A website owner can sign up for a Google AdSense account, and Google will display highly-targeted ads on the website. For instance, suppose you have a website about skateboarding. You control the placement of the ads, but Google controls the content of the ads. When one of your website visitors clicks on the ad, Google collects a fee from the advertiser and splits this fee with you.

Let's assume your website is 6 months old, has 5 pages, and you have 100 visitors per day to your site (a modest amount). If each visitor views 3 pages of your site that would equal 300 page views per day. If on each page 4% of the visitors click on an ad, that would be 12 clicks per day. Let's further assume that Google receives $1.00 per click and splits this with you. Your share would be $6.00 per day (12 clicks times 50 cents per click). This would be a monthly income of $180.00.

This meager amount of cash flow might not seem worth the effort. However, there are things you can do to increase it substantially. One, add more pages to your website. Two, create more websites. Three, get more visitors. Four, target higher paying ads by building websites around topics that pay better.

Using the skateboard example again, let's assume that you continue to build the site and add new content every week that your readers really like. Word of mouth will spread among the skateboard community. After another year the number of daily visitors could slowly but steadily have increased to 1,000 per day. This could have the effect of a tenfold increase in earnings, assuming all else remains the same. $1,800.00 per month begins to get lucrative. What if you have 5 sites each earning that much? That's $9,000.00 per month, enough to probably improve your lifestyle substantially.
